Searching for earthquakes underground
Caves can give us information about earthquakes we could never find any other way. French geologist Eric Gilli, a passionate speleologist, is a pioneer in this new scientific field. He has already proved its worth, showing that a dam in Turkey built on what was thought to be a safe site was in fact in a region that suffered an earthquake sometime between 800 and 5,000 B.C.
"We hope it will allow us to put forward a method for evaluating the risk of earthquakes in a large number of regions where there is no historical data.”
Gilli is now carrying out a series of exploration campaigns which he hopes will contribute to a new methodology for understanding earth tremors.
