Ban Tung Taseh, Thailand. Pisit Charnsnoh aims to involve local people in projects to restore dugongs’ coastal habitat.

Thailand. Dugong (3.5m long and up to 400kg) is used by Charnsnoh as the flagship for protecting the coastal environment.

Hat Chaomai, Thailand. Rich in seagrass, Hat Chaomai region offers a favourable environment for dugongs (here at low tide).

Ban Leam, Thailand. Charnsnoh often makes boat trips in the region to observe dugongs.

Ban Leam, Thailand. Ban Leam is the centre of 8 fishing villages which co-operate with Charnsnoh’s association, Yadfon.

Ban Leam, Thailand. Fishermen are main source of information for Charnsnoh during his frequent dugong census boat trips.

Trang, Thailand. The endangered rainforest in the south of Trang, is part of Charnsnoh’s restoration project.

Hat Chaomai, Thailand. Thanks to active mangrove conservation, villagers have noticed increase in near-shore fish catches.

Taseh, Thailand. Charnsnoh (centre) organises seminars to educate villagers in conservation.

Improving the lives of Thai fishing communities

On moving to the Andaman Sea coast in 1985, Thai environmentalist Pisit Charnsnoh founded the Yadfon Association to assist impoverished local fishing communities through environmental programmes.

"We help people to understand and love the dugong.”

Through one of Yadfon’s first projects, the restoration of a mangrove forest, he noticed the decline of a marine mammal, the dugong. He decided to use the dugong as the flagship for a programme to improve the lives of fishing communities.
