Armed with a doctoral degree in fluid mechanics, Uruguayan mechanical engineer Rafael Guarga has spent his life solving technical problems that combine his expertise in science and engineering.
Born in 1940, Guarga teaches at the University of the Republic, in Montevideo, where he served as rector from 1998 to 2006, and is also general director of Frost Protection Corporation, the company that developed and commercialized his Selected Inverted Sink (SIS) system. This invention earned him a Rolex Award in 1998.
In the past decade, Guarga has refined the inexpensive and environmentally friendly cold-extracting chimney, which helps protect fruit harvests from devastating frost damage. Today, thanks to the credibility and visibility the Award brought to the project, the innovative SIS system is used by growers in a dozen countries.
Guarga is now extending SIS applications to odour and pollution control, as well as to radiation fog control over airports and highways, improving the environment and passenger security.
